Spring (almost) Greetings from Gorham!!

While there is still plenty of snow around Dart's Lake, there could be more.  My last call with Anne let me know that there were still people up there snowmobiling, but that they wanted more snow !

Preparations are well underway for the 2010 camping season, Anne and Christina are busy interviewing and hiring staff as well visiting 2009 parent homes to meet new parents of potential campers, and Pete and Jon continue on multiple projects to get the camp ready.  Camp welcomed a new Director of Administration, Jennifer Crim in January who is all ready to go with answering questions and serving our families. All while the entire Gorham on-site team is also taking care of all the winter guests!

In February it was noted that we now have an "official" Alumni organization, complete with a charter and a hierarchy.  All the details and the documentation for the Gorham Alumni Association will shortly be housed on the Alumni portal of our website.  We are continuing with the work on that portal so please be patient.  It is one of the many things we have to yet get completed to maintain the momentum - but it is in the process of being implemented and completed!

George Romell, President and CEO, delivered an address to his leadership team on the five key objectives for the entire association for the upcoming year.  One of those 5 objectives was to firmly establish alumni associations at the two resident camps - Gorham, and our sister camp on Keuka Lake, Camp Cory.  I asked George to elaborate, briefly, and he commented “Successful overnight camps not only have quality facilities and caring staff, but they also have a large and active alumni organization that supports the camp by volunteering, giving donations, and helping to build enrollment through referrals. In order to continue to strengthen YMCA Camp Gorham, we must encourage active participation in the new Alumni Association and continuously seek new members to join its ranks.”

What's next for our Alumni Association?  Our next goal is to establish a "decades" leader for each the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000.  Remember our definition of 'Alumni' -  someone who has come in contact with the camp as a camper, staff, parent of camper or staff, or someone who has been to Gorham in an off-season program, either sponsored by the camp or simply through a rental, and also someone who has been part of the property's history, possibly before it had the Gorham name.  Anne and I are working up a formal 'job description' for these roles, but we are looking for people who have a passion for Gorham, who enjoyed their experience(s) at Gorham, and people who have a focus on taking actions and getting results on behalf of the camp.  Should you have ideas for people for these roles, or questions, please contact Anne, Christina, or myself.

Do you know a young girl or young boy that would benefit from a 1 or 2 week stay at Gorham?  Referrals from alumni have big impact on decisions for summer activities.  Let Anne and the team know if you would like us to answer any questions for prospective campers.  I firmly believe that there is not a camp in the USA that can offer the full package of opportunities that YMCA Camp Gorham does.
